This Act may be cited as the Fisheries Act 1985 and shall apply in Malaysian fisheries waters, and on the high seas in respect of any local fishing vessel and, subject to subsection (2), in riverine waters within the jurisdiction of each of the States in Malaysia and of the Federation in respect of the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur and Labuan.

This Act shall come into operation on such date as the Minister may appoint by notification in the Gazette and the Minister may appoint different dates for the coming into operation of different provisions of this Act in different areas:
Provided that the provisions of this Act insofar as they relate to turtles and riverine fishing in any State in Malaysia shall not come into operation in that State until they have been adopted by a law made by the Legislature of that State.
